Parent Letter Example
February 24, 2014
Dear Parents and Guardians,
It is my pleasure to introduce myself, Meagan Flodeen, as your child’s science teacher for the year 2014-2015. I am a recent graduate from the University of Florida where I obtained Bachelors in Biology and an UFTeach minor in science education.
I strongly believe in an integrated approach to science with a use of a wide range of activities to promote student inquiry, especially the use of hands on activities and laboratories. The school year will be devoted to successfully completing the twelve various biology units in addition to also developing the students’ critical thinking skills, comprehension, collaborative skills, public speaking, inquiry-based investigative skills. I strongly believe in the use of approved technology to facilitate greater scientific understanding. Each unit will vary in length from two to four weeks depending on concept complexity and time required for student mastery. Each unit will include a wide variety of activities, laboratories, quizzes, homework assignments, required readings, and one end of the unit test. Grades in this course will follow the following composition: 40% Tests, 20% Laboratories, 20% Quizzes, and 20% Attendance (Activities, Readings, Assignments, and Homework). Student progress will be visible on the online grade book via blackboard and should be updated regularly.
In order to develop a positive, safe, and interactive learning environment there are certain rules set in place that the students are expected to abide by. With the intended use of lab activities and tools, safety is the number one priority. Any violations of the lab safety guidelines, which your students have been requested to sign in addition to acquiring your signatures, will be grounds for immediate dismissal from lab incurring a grade penalty or in severe cases may result in a student referral. In regards to aim for a positive dynamic learning environment, I ask that the students make effort to attend every class on time, follow instructions, and remain respectful towards their classmates as well as myself. If the students are to miss class any missed work must be made up the day of returning to class. If problems with these rules emerge the action towards parental contact, detentions, and referrals will be taken.
Throughout this year, I strongly encourage you to maintain open contact with if you have any questions or concerns. My email is checked frequently and I should be able to return contact within the day. I will also be more than happy to answer any questions you may have at the upcoming parent teacher night as well. With the nature of science being a very project based subject, donations such as paper towels, cups, stir sticks, and other related items are always welcome and appreciated. We would also be thrilled to host any guest speakers who work in a field of science, as well as any parents that would be interested in helping organize, chaperone, or sit in on any laboratory activities/field trips.
I am very excited about having the opportunity to get to know all of your children and believe that this is going to be a fantastic year!
Sincerely,
Meagan Flodeen
