PBI Project Title: Florida Marine Ecosystems
This project based unit was intended for 11th/12th grade students in Marine Science Course at PK Yonge Research and Developmental School. Since we are in fact a state surrounded by water, this unit is concerned with the various marine ecosystems that lie within the state. A major portion, outlined by the state benchmarks, of the Marine Science Course is devoted the understanding of ecosystems and the various abiotic/biotic components that make up these ecosystems. So first and foremost to gather information about what would be expected from the students for their project based unit I conducted a CTS which is shown in one of the tabs. With the CTS completed I was able to create my driving question or project challenge for my students that would serve as both engagement and motivation for the entire unit, which is also shown in one of the tabs. Since this unit will be consuming much of their time, effort, and have heavy contribution to their quarter grade, at the beginning of the unit I sent home a letter to the parents describing the format/expectations of the student's PBI projects, the tabs also includes: a calendar that sets a time frame for unit completion, a grant proposal for the unit, a detailed outline of the field trip they will be doing, and more information regarding their final product.
The student product will be some sort of presentation (Voice & Choice) of their ecosystem of choice that is in trouble due to human impact. This is an authentic project because they will be developing a solution to help this troubled ecosystem (real-world issue) that will be presented via video conference to their affected area.
I believe this project is very important as citizens of Florida, where a big part of our industry is tourism as well as our natural marine resource conservation efforts are very important here due to the nature of our geography. Also there are many possible wildlife majors in the class that could be very interested in marine animal conservation.
